Guided exercise 1

This kind of exercise is intended as the final preparation for the practical exercises. By analyzing the photograph, you are tasked with identifying the key elements and recommending the camera settings required to capture it. While in the field, you can practice shooting similar photographs with various adjustments, which will broaden your knowledge and skills. Furthermore, this section aims to demonstrate how to learn from the work of other photographers.

Exercise in Photography

Observations

This is an image of a distant, stationary subject (landscape) with a large depth of field, shot with a telelens.

Main priority

Achieve a large depth of field and optimal sharpness across the frame.

Considerations

In this scenario, the considerable distance to the subject and the area where the frame starts are essential factors for attaining a large depth of field. Although telephoto lenses limit the depth of field, in this case, the considerable subject-to-lens distance compensates for the long focal length.

The hyperfocal focus technique is an option but probably not a critical element in achieving optimal sharpness across the scene, as the frame begins far from the photographer.

The colors may have been enhanced during post-processing.

If necessary, exposure can be adjusted using exposure compensation in aperture priority mode or determined using the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in manual exposure mode.

These are the likely camera settings:

Exposure mode: aperture priority or manual

Aperture: f/11 or higher

Shutter speed: 1/250 or faster due to the use of a telelens

ISO: high enough to allow handheld photography

Focus mode: AF-S/ONE SHOT

AF points: single point

White balance: automatic
